The First Tee of Greater El Paso The Chapter was formed in 2008. Kristi Albers, who is now the Executive Director, knows Henry Sandles who is the Director, Mountain Region Affairs of The First Tee. Henry was Kristi’s golf coach at the University of New Mexico. Henry kept telling Kristi that El Paso would be a perfect place for a The First Tee Chapter. Kristi played on the LPGA tour for 22 years. She didn’t want to retire until she found something else to do that would be worthwhile. That is when she started to pursue the idea of The First Tee in El Paso. The Ascarate Golf course is the perfect place for this venue. It is located in the central part of El Paso. Kristi started talking to the County officials to see if they would support such a program. The county and Ascarate Golf Course were very excited about this idea of such a wonderful program coming to their golf facility.
After a year of planning and much paper work The First Tee of Greater El Paso had its grand opening on June 2, 2008. The County of El Paso signed the use agreement with The First Tee of Greater El Paso to use Ascarate Golf Course and the Delta Nine. The Delta nine is a par 35 nine hole course. There is also a full size driving range, chipping area and putting green. Today, The First Tee of Greater El Paso operates from the Ascarate Golf Course Delta nine holes, a nine hole short course, a complete practice area which includes a covered and lighted driving range, a chipping area and putting green. The County of El Paso owns and operates the Ascarate Golf Course.
The facility is allowing The First Tee of Greater El Paso the use of a 3,000 sq. foot clubhouse for their classroom activities. Children ages 7-18 from the El Paso area and all its surrounding communities can join The First Tee of Greater El Paso for $50 and each session will be a $25 fee.Scholarships are available to those who require it. The activity fee allows members to utilize the golf courses, learning center, and enters them into The First Tee Life Skills Program; paying for their Life Skills materials. The Ascarate Golf Course gives students of The First Tee of Greater El Paso a 60% discount on range balls and green fees in non-programming hours.
